Smart Cities Mission Srinagar Jammu: A separate executing agency will be established for the effective implementation of Smart Cities Mission for twin capitals of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar and Jammu.

Union Urban Development Department cleared the proposal on June 24 this year of developing Srinagar and Jammu as smart cities.

State’s Housing and Urban Development Department will release Rs 500 crore at the initial stage of the project for each city.

There will be two CEO’s for better coordination in works of smart city projects.
The core infrastructure elements in a smart city include adequate water supply, assured electricity supply, sanitation including solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, affordable housing, robust IT connectivity and digitalization, good governance especially e-governance and citizen participation and sustainable environment.

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development department said tthat the Smart City project has four components– intelligent traffic system, green zones, cycle track, and urban traffic management.

Under the Smart City project, official documents reveal that the Downtown will be reconnecting with the Jhelum and the Baba Demb will be rejuvenated.

There will be revitalization of heritage and cultural tourism, rejuvenation of artisan clusters and historic markets and economic revival of downtown, Downtown urban renewal and improved urban mobility and smart utilities management in Srinagar, the documents read.

For Jammu city, the documents state that the project will focus on its heritage, tourism, core city area development, sustainable public spaces, urban mobility and its infrastructure, sewage, sanitation, drainage, and solid waste management.

After registration of both smart cities, board of directors meeting would be held following which the state will approach GoI, for securing 1st installment of central share of Rs 196 crore for each city.

The Smart Cities Mission was launched by the Prime Minister. Smart City Mission—aimed at improving basic urban infrastructure in cities.
